Start of the Great Winter (1947)
Beginning on January 23, 1947, the UK experienced one of its harshest winters on record, which brought massive drifts of snow, blocked transport routes, and caused a national fuel crisis. The winter led to significant industrial disruption, a loss of around 10% of the year’s industrial production, and the death of a quarter of the national sheep stock.

Severe Cold During the “Great Freeze” (1838)
The Great Freeze of 1838 continued on 23 January with temperatures widely below −10°C. The Thames remained frozen in several reaches, and canals across the Midlands were blocked by thick ice, halting barge transport.

Record-Breaking Cold in China (Mohe City, China) (2023)
On January 23, 2023, Mohe City in China’s far northeast set a national low-temperature record of −53.0 °C (−63.4 °F). This was the lowest temperature recorded there since 1969 and part of an extreme cold snap that also affected the Russian Federation and other parts of Asia.

U.S. East Coast – Winter Storm “Jonas” (2016)
On January 23, 2016, record-breaking snowfall affected multiple states from Washington, D.C. to New York City. Central Park recorded 68.1 cm of snow in 24 hours. Wind gusts peaked at 90 km/h along the coast. The storm caused at least 49 fatalities and paralyzed transportation networks.

Eastern Australia – Drought-Induced Heatwave (1913)
January 23, 1913, recorded one of the hottest days of the Australian summer drought period. Bourke reached 46.8°C, with relative humidity below 10%. Livestock losses were widespread, and windborne dust storms reduced visibility to below 500 m across New South Wales.
