Storm Deidre (2018)
On December 15–16, 2018, Storm Deirdre swept across the UK, causing major disruption. Winds gusted up to 79 mph, but the most hazardous impacts came from widespread freezing rain in northern England and southern Scotland, creating treacherous ice and triggering numerous traffic accidents, including on the M74 motorway. Heavy snow also hit central Scotland and northeast England, while hundreds of homes were left without power.

Onset of “The Big Freeze” (2009)
On December 16, 2009, forecasters warned of heavy snowfall as a band of rain moving south turned to snow across Kent, Surrey, Sussex, and Hampshire, causing immediate disruption. The event marked the onset of a prolonged spell of severe cold weather that gripped the UK through the winter of 2009–2010.

Record December Warmth (2015)
On December 16, temperatures soared to 17°C in Aber, North Wales — the hottest December 16th ever recorded in the UK. The unseasonable warmth formed part of a broader weather pattern that also delivered the wettest month on record, with storms Desmond, Eva, and Frank causing severe flooding across northern England and Scotland. The mild conditions produced unusual sights, including daffodils blooming in mid-December.

Torrential rains on December 16, 2002, caused widespread flooding along Mozambique’s Limpopo River. Dozens were killed, and aid convoys struggled to reach remote areas as bridges collapsed under the deluge.
