“Big Freeze” Onset (1962)
One of the coldest winters in UK history began on December 22, 1962, when snow first fell across Scotland before spreading southward. The Arctic conditions persisted until March, leading to rivers and lakes freezing solid and even sections of the sea off the Kent coast turning to ice. In some regions, snow cover remained unbroken for 62 consecutive days.
