The historic winter of 1962–63 deepened on December 28th. Severe frost gripped the entire country, with widespread ice on roads and frozen canals. Snow cover persisted across much of England.

Aftermath of the Tay Bridge Disaster Storm (1879)
On December 28, 1879, the storm that had wrecked the Tay Rail Bridge kept lashing eastern Scotland with winds over 100 km/h. Buildings were knocked down, and recovery efforts in Dundee were held up. Out at sea, reports told of several shipwrecks in the North Sea, adding to the lasting fallout from one of Britain’s most notorious structural disasters.

Storm Frank Strengthens (2015)
On December 28th, heavy rainfall intensified ahead of Storm Frank. Northern England and Scotland saw rivers rise rapidly, worsening ongoing flooding. Several communities in Cumbria and Aberdeenshire issued evacuation advisories.

On December 28, 1935, Sydney hit a scorching 42.1°C during a heatwave sweeping New South Wales. Public festivities were scaled back, and health officials rolled out early heat warnings. It still ranks as one of the city’s hottest late-December days in the pre-war weather records.

Japan – Hokkaido Blizzard (1947)
On December 28, 1947, a fierce blizzard slammed into Hokkaido, with winds topping 120 km/h and snow piling up several meters high. Sapporo was brought to a standstill as transportation ground to a halt, and sadly, several lives were lost to the freezing conditions. The storm underscored how vulnerable Japan was to sudden blasts of Arctic air in the years after the war.
