Aftermath of the Great Storm Flooding (1703)
On December 30, 1703, the aftermath of the Great Storm still wreaked havoc along England’s southern coast. High tides flooded parts of Somerset and Sussex, and though the storm’s peak had passed earlier in the month, ongoing surges and strong winds kept disrupting maritime activity, slowing the recovery of harbors and coastal trade.

Highland Snowstorm (1880)
On December 30, 1880, a powerful blizzard swept through the Scottish Highlands, cutting off many rural communities. Snowdrifts over 2 metres high blocked roads near Inverness and halted the Inverness–Perth railway. The storm hit during one of the coldest late-December spells of the 19th century in Scotland.

Snow and Ice Disruptions (1993)
On December 30, 1993, southern England and Wales were hit by snow and freezing rain, causing major disruptions on roads and at airports, especially along the M4 corridor and at Heathrow. In rural Oxfordshire, temperatures dropped below -10°C, making it one of the coldest December days of the 1990s.

On December 30, 1929, Paris hit -9°C during a sweeping European cold wave. The River Seine froze over with thick ice for the first time in almost ten years, and the relentless chill disrupted food deliveries and water systems across northern France.

Northeastern USA – Arctic Cold Snap (1978)
On December 30, 1978, a blast of Arctic air sent temperatures plummeting below -25°C across the Great Lakes and New England. Widespread blackouts and heating fuel shortages added to the misery. Coming right after that month’s massive blizzard, it cemented one of the coldest and harshest late-year freezes ever recorded.

Northeast USA – Arctic Outbreak (2017)
On December 30, 2017, a blast of Arctic air sent temperatures plummeting to -37°C in northern Maine and -29°C across Vermont and Quebec. Coastal snow squalls brought blizzard conditions, marking one of the final punches of the extreme cold wave that wrapped up the 2017–18 North American winter season.
