The End of the Great Smog of London (1952)
Between December 5 and 9, 1952, London was choked by a deadly smog. The Great Smog of London, a deadly pollution crisis that claimed an estimated 4,000 to 12,000 lives, began to lift on December 8 as weather conditions changed. The disaster underscored the perils of toxic air and spurred the landmark Clean Air Act of 1956.
Widespread Windstorm (1993)
A powerful windstorm swept across the UK, with gusts nearing 100 mph in Wales and Cornwall. The storm left five people dead and caused widespread damage, including toppling a 350-year-old oak at Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire.
Hurricane Bawbag (2011)
A deep Atlantic low, dubbed “Hurricane Bawbag,” battered the UK with fierce winds, hitting the north hardest. Central Scotland was placed under a red weather warning as gusts of 70–80 mph swept the region, while the Cairngorm summit registered an extraordinary mean wind speed of 117 mph and a peak gust of 165 mph.

Great Plains Blizzard (USA) (1887)
A catastrophic blizzard struck the Midwest on December 8, 1887, with temperatures plunging to -35°F (-37°C) in Dakota Territory. The storm killed thousands of cattle and trapped settlers in snowdrifts up to 20 feet deep.
Taiwan Typhoon Amy (1951)
Typhoon Amy made landfall on December 8, 1951 – unusually late in the season. The storm killed 147 people in Taiwan and destroyed 20,000 homes with 115 mph winds and catastrophic flooding.
Colorado Dust Storm (1932)
On December 8, 1932, a massive dust storm swept across eastern Colorado during the Dust Bowl era. Visibility dropped to zero for 10 hours, with windblown topsoil creating 100-foot-high drifts against buildings.
