    Great Plains, USA – “Schoolhouse Blizzard” (1888)

    On January 11, 1888, a sudden blizzard swept across the Great Plains, plunging temperatures from above freezing to −40°C (−40°F) in just a few hours. Blinding whiteout conditions stranded children in rural schoolhouses throughout Nebraska and the Dakotas, resulting in at least 235 deaths. With winds topping 80 km/h, it became one of the most severe cold weather disasters in U.S. history.
