    London – Dense Freezing Fog (1905)

    London experienced one of its worst fog episodes on January 9, 1905. Visibility dropped below 3 meters, halting transport across the city. Coal smoke combined with cold, saturated air created “pea-soup” conditions. The event lasted for nearly 48 hours, causing dozens of traffic fatalities and respiratory illnesses.

    Tongue River, Montana, USA – Extreme Blizzard (1887)

    On January 9, 1887, the “Great Die-Up” blizzard struck the Great Plains, with temperatures dropping to −46°C (−50°F). The storm buried cattle under meters of snow, killing over 100,000 livestock, and leading to major losses for ranchers. Wind chills reached −60°C, marking one of the deadliest blizzards in U.S. ranching history.
