    After a stretch of bitter cold that froze the ground, heavy rain mixed with snowmelt on January 24th caused a sudden and severe flood on the River Thames. The rushing waters swept away bridges in Eton, Deptford, and Lewisham, and destroyed the central arch of Wallingford Bridge.

    This storm was the UK’s most powerful windstorm in over a decade.
    Highest UK wind gust: 100 mph (87 knots) at Drumalbin in Lanarkshire, Scotland.
    Many locations across Northern Ireland and Scotland’s Central Belt experienced gusts of over 80 mph.
    Lowest pressure: A weather station on Tiree, Inner Hebrides, recorded the UK’s lowest pressure reading since storm naming was introduced in 2015. The central pressure of the storm fell by 50hPa in 24 hours (a process of “explosive cyclogenesis”), from 991hPa on Jan 23 to 941hPa.
    Around one million homes were left without power across Ireland and the UK, and all rail services were halted in Scotland.

    Japan – Heavy Snowfall in Honshu (2018)

    On January 24, 2018, Tokyo recorded its lowest temperature (–4°C) in 48 years following a blizzard two days prior. Snow depth in central Tokyo reached 23 cm. Cold air from Siberia contributed to widespread transport disruption and over 300 injuries due to icy conditions.

    On January 24, 1973, torrential El Niño–driven rainfall struck northern coastal Peru and southern Ecuador. Piura recorded 120 mm in 24 hours. Severe flooding damaged infrastructure and affected over 10,000 households. Agricultural losses were extensive due to saturated soils.

    France – Flooding of the Seine River (1859)

    On January 24, 1859, prolonged winter rains caused the Seine River in Paris to rise more than 6.5 m above normal. Floodwaters inundated parts of the Left Bank, damaging quaysides and bridges. Reports from the French Meteorological Service confirm this as one of the highest January crests on record.
