    On December 29, 1903, freezing rain blanketed Chicago and much of the Midwest in a thick layer of ice. Telegraph poles and wires gave way under the heavy load, cutting power and halting tram services. Falling ice caused several accidents, marking one of the earliest recorded urban ice storms in Chicago’s history.
