    On January 14, 1916, central and southern England were hit by freezing rain followed by snow. Ice built up over 10 mm thick, snapping telegraph wires and stopping trains between London and Birmingham. It all happened during one of Britain’s coldest winters in the early 20th century.

    Coldest Day of “Big Freeze” (1963)

    On January 14, 1963, temperatures across the UK and western Europe hit their lowest point of the winter. In Benson, Oxfordshire, the mercury dropped to −19.4°C, and parts of the Thames and Severn rivers froze over. It was the coldest January in England and Wales since 1814.

    California, USA – Central Valley Flood (1862)

    On January 14, 1862, heavy rains kept pouring during the Great Flood of 1862. Sacramento, Stockton, and much of the Central Valley ended up underwater, with depths reaching 3 to 5 meters. The relentless month-long downpour from atmospheric rivers turned the valley into a massive inland sea, wiping out thousands of livestock and forcing tens of thousands of people from their homes.

    On January 14, 2011, relentless monsoon rains triggered devastating floods across central and eastern Sri Lanka. In just 48 hours, rainfall exceeded 300 mm, forcing more than 325,000 people from their homes and causing severe damage to agriculture in the Polonnaruwa district.

    Loma, Montana, USA – World Record Temperature Change (1972)

    January 14-15 marked the greatest 24-hour temperature change ever recorded globally. A powerful Chinook wind event caused the temperature in Loma to skyrocket from a frigid -54F (-48C) to a balmy 49F (9C). This 103F (57C) swing shattered the previous world record. The rapid warming caused instantaneous melting of snow and significant structural stress on buildings due to thermal expansion.

    Madagascar – Cyclone Gretelle (1997)

    Intense Tropical Cyclone Gretelle made landfall in southeastern Madagascar on January 14 with sustained winds of 140 mph (220 km/h). The system delivered catastrophic rainfall, causing floods that reached depths of 16 meters (52 feet) in certain valleys. The storm destroyed approximately 80,000 homes and resulted in 152 confirmed fatalities, primarily due to drowning and landslides in isolated rural regions.

    Ontario, Canada – Historic Blizzard (2022)

    A huge winter storm, known as a “Saskatchewan Screamer,” swept over the Great Lakes and intensified. On January 14, Toronto saw its first blizzard warning since 1993. The storm dumped 22 inches (55 cm) of snow on Toronto and 19 inches (48 cm) on Ottawa. At its peak, snowfall rates topped 4 inches (10 cm) per hour, shutting down transit systems and closing major provincial highways.
